Philippe Montanier (born 15 November 1964) is French former footballer and manager. Montanier is one of a growing number of managers to have played as a goalkeeper in their earlier career; others include Leonid Slutsky, Walter Zenga and Julen Lopetegui. He is currently the head coach of France U20.[1]
Career
Montanier played as a goalkeeper for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 sides, including Caen, Nantes, Toulouse, Gueugnon and Saint-Étienne.
Coaching career
He managed US Boulogne from 2004 and was named Ligue 2 best manager in 2009.[2] After achieving promotion to Ligue 1, he left Boulogne for Valenciennes FC.[3]
Montanier was offered job as Spanish La Liga club Real Sociedad manager. He signed a two-year contract with the club on 4 June 2011.[4]
On 21 May 2013 it was announced that he would not extend his contract at Real Sociedad, and join Stade Rennais at the end of the season.[5]
On 27 June 2016 he was appointed manager of Nottingham Forest, currently playing in the Championship.[6] His first game in charge came on 6 August where his side beat newly promoted Burton Albion F.C. 4-3 at the City Ground.
On 14 January 2017 Montanier was relieved of his duties following a run of 2 points from a possible 21 and only two clean sheets in 30 games.
