Philippe Lardy is a painter, illustrator, comics artist, artistic director for Almanach Soldes magazine and co-founder of Le Crayon.

Early life

Philippe Lardy was born 1963, in Basel, Switzerland. He studied at Institut Saint-Luc, in Bruxelles, before attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Illustration

Philippe Lardy attended the School of Visual Arts in the late 80's in New York, taking the classes of Will Eisner and Jerry Moriarty. He co-published "GIN & COMIX" with Jose Ortega, inspired by RAW magazine,a ground-breaking publication directed by Art Spiegelman, bringing together an international showcase of artists. Philippe Lardy drew for numerous prominent American periodicals, publishers and corporations. Among his clients were Time magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker. Subjects are often symbolic and explore the dreamlike nature of archetypes. Philippe says "My drawings are born out of the desire to create narrative images. They operate like parabals and their aim is to communicate an idea as graphically as possible. My painting, on the other hand, developed as a form of silence, as a counterpoint to the allegories of my illustrations"[1]

New York - Genève, a retrospective

In 2009, Lardy put together the New York - Genève exhibition at Villa Bernasconi where he retrospected on his work as an illustrator as well as on the friendships he had made with artists in New York. Along with his own work, the show presented Abe Frajndlich's photographies of the streets of New York, along with American Illustration artists such as Guy Billout, Laurie Rosenwald, Sue Coe, Peter Sís and others.

Philippe Lardy wrote the book New York Chronicles to celebrate the show and offer an illustrated retrospective of his friends work.

Painting

Lardy moves to Paris in 2000 to give greater emphasis to his paintings: "Illustration and painting are complementary activities: the one feeds off the other. My drawings connect me to the outside world, while painting offers me the opportunity for introspection,’ he says."[1]

Almanach Soldes

Since 2008, he has been art directing a french publication "Almanach Soldes Fin de Séries" with designer and editor Marc Borgers. The Almanac features a range of international painters, illustrators, comic book artists, writers and philosophers, in a large format.

Hypersomnia

A number of chapters of his graphic novel "Hypersomnia" is featured in "Soldes". A sequential narration inspired by images of the subconscious: the peregrinations of an artist in search of inspiration. The main character is going through often traumatizing, sometime enlightening situations in his search for the ultimate work of Art.This comic strip is drawn in a detailed manner, in echo of the pre-modernist images of Max Klinger. In contrast, Philippe Lardy's gallery art often shows flat geometrical shapes and colors.
