Pezhakkappilly (Malayalam-പേഴക്കാപ്പിള്ളി) is a suburb of Muvattupuzha town. This small town is situated in Muvattupuzha-Angamaly MC Road. It is a growing Edge town with Muvattupuzha. The town has seen rapid urbanization and growth in the recent years.
Pezhakkappilly is the main town in Paipra Panchayath. The main junctions are Paipra Kavala, Sabine Junction, Pallichirangara, Pallipady, Trikalathoor. The main business centre of Pezhakkappilly is Paipra Kavala which is located 4 km from Muvattupuzha, which is the second biggest commercial centre of the Ernakulam district and one of the biggest in the central part of the Kerala state.
Location
Pezhakkappilly is located at North of Muvattupuzha which is 4 km from city centre. Perumbavoor and Kolenchery which are proposed to be a part of the Greater Cochin Development Authority are within a distance of 15 km. The nearby towns of Pezhakkappilly are, Mannoor 4 km north along MC Road, Cheruvattoor 5 km east along Payipra Cheruvattoor Road. Mulavoor, 5 km east. Nellad at a reach of 5 km along Paipra Veettoor Road.
Demographics
Paipra Panchyath has a population of 32779 at an area of 32.18 km2. The population density is about 1000/km2. The male population is 16718 and female is 16061 at 2011 Census[1]. The major religion in Pezhakkappilly is Islam. The place has also one of the largest Muslim Population in Ernakulam District. Hindus and Christians also make up the rest of the Population. There is also a large number of immigrant labour population.
Politics
Pezhakkappilly is a part of Paipra Panchayath. The town has the presence of the major political parties in Kerala, Indian National Congress, CPI(M), CPI, Muslim League. The panchayath is ruled by UDF on a power sharing basis between Congress and Muslim League. Alice George of Congress is the current President of the panchayath.
Pezhakkappilly is the part of Muvattupuzha legislative assembly constituency and is part of Idukki Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
Pezhakkappilly consists of mainly highlands and midlands with agriculture and small-scale industries as its primary economy. The main agricultural outputs are Rubber, Pineappale, Tappioca and Banana.There are a number of Plywood and Timber mills. With the influx of migrant labours there are lot of jobs for them at Several Plywood and other manufacturing units.
The Economy of Pezhakkapilly has also benefied much from the Infertilty Clinic, Sabine Hospital & Research Centre with lot of jobs directily and indirectily. Lots real estate properties are developed in the area with lot of Homestays, Lodges, Hotels, Bakeries. A large number of people visit the hospital daily.
Since a major State Highway 1, it is also a prime stop for passengers travelling across Kerala. It is a main route during the Sabarimala Pilimigrage. Piligrims across several states passes through this town which provides a lot of Business the Restaurents and Lodges. It is also an alternative route from Kottayam to Thrissur without touching Kochi.
