Peter Mbithi

Peter Mulwa Felix Mbithi is a Kenyan Professor of Veterinary Surgery and a university official. In 2015, Peter Mbithi was appointed by the Government of Kenya as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi,[1][2] after serving as Deputy Vice Chancellor[3] in charge of Finance and Administration for a number of years.[4]

Early life and education

Mbithi was born on 4 July 1956 in Kangundo, Machakos. In 1983, he obtained a BVM (Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine) from the University of Nairobi. That same year, he started giving undergraduate lectures, seminars and clinicals in Veterinary Surgery.

In 1985, he obtained a Master of Science qualification in Clinical Studies from the University of Nairobi. Two years later, he achieved a Master of Veterinary Science qualification from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Between 1986 and 1987, he was in surgical residency in Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.

He obtained a Ph.D from the University of Nairobi in 1995. His thesis was on studies on pseudoarthrosis of the bovine metacarpophalangeal joints. His research interests are clinical veterinary medicine and orthopeadic surgery, wounding and traumatology with special interest in lameness, joint surgery and athritides.

Career

Mbithi became a professor at the University of Nairobi. He held various administrative posts there, including Chairman of the Department of Clinical Studies, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Studies and Principal of the College of Veterinary Sciences.

After serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor,[5] in 2015 he is Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance) and Professor of Veterinary Surgery.[6][7]

In his position as Vice Chancellor, Mbithi frequently acts as the University's media spokesperson and is called upon to speak at formal events.[8] He also acts as chair of the negotiating committee during staff salary negotiations.[9] In 2015 he was in the news because of disagreements with his deputy vice chancellor, who was subsequently recommended for dismissal.[10]

In 2016 Mbithi was threatened with ejection from the Kenya Universities Staff Union over disagreements about staff employment benefits.[11] He was also the target of student protests over the university's policies concerning student residences.[12]

Mbithi is married with children.
