Pete Julian (born May 11, 1971) is a coach of the Nike Oregon Project, and was once a professional distance runner representing the United States.[1]
As an athlete for Adidas,[2] Julian won a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 1999 Pan American Games and was selected to represent the United States at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics in the same event, where he finished 22nd. He also competed at the 1997 and 1998 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.[1]
Julian began his coaching career working for the Washington State University cross country team, taking the team to the NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championship.[2] He later joined as an assistant coach to the Nike Oregon Project (NOP) in 2008, in part by virtue of his connections to famed coach Alberto Salazar.[2] Julian is a multiple-time cancer survivor, having survived leukemia via an experimental treatment during his early years at NOP.[3]
Since 2015, the NOP remains under investigation from U.S. anti-doping authorities for suspected violations of anti-doping rules.[4] The Oregon Project denies that any rules were violated.[5]
Though Salazar remains the head coach, Julian deals with many of the athletes personally as the "point guy", saying in 2017: "I was spending a lot of time with particular athletes, and was taking on more of lead role with a few of them. It came about that I became the point guy. It's really sort of a natural transition."[6]
