History
In 1943, there were 2 transport companies in the Japanese occupation era which were Jawa Unyu Zigyosha (ジャワ運輸自動車) that specialized in cargo transport using truck and carts, and Zidosha Sokyoku (自動車総局 jidousha soukyoku) that specialized in man transport with motorized vehicles or buses. In 1945, after the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence, under the Ministry of Transportation, Jawa Unyu Zigyosha changed into Djawatan Pengangkoetan for cargo transport, and Zidosha Sokyoku changed into Djawatan Angkutan Darat for man transport.
On 25 November 1946, both departments were unified based on Transportation Minister Notice RI No.01/DAM/46 to form "Djawatan Angkoetan Motor Repoeblik Indonesia", also known as DAMRI, with a main task to carry out land transport using bus, truck and other motor vehicles.
That task was what became the historical courage that DAMRI has played an active role in the struggle to maintain independence against the Dutch aggression in Java.
1961, there was a change of status of DAMRI that became Badan Pimpinan Umum Perusahaan Negara (BPUPN) based on Government Rule No. 233-year 1961, which was then erased at 1965 and then set as a state owned company.
Again in 1982, DAMRI had a change of status and became a Public Company (Perum) based on Government Rule No. 31 Year 1984 together with Government Rule No. 31 Year 2002 and goes on up to today, where Perum DAMRI is given a task and authority to carry out transportation for man and or cargo on the road using motorized vehicles. Now, DAMRI is a company that is owned by the Indonesian Government under the ministry of state owned company.
