Percona

Percona is the developer of a number of open source software projects for MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB and RocksDB users. They state that all of their software is ‘fully open source and entirely free’. The company’s revenue is derived from open source database related support, consultancy and managed services.

The company was founded in 2006 by Peter Zaitsev and Vadim Tkachenko.[1] Its headquarters are in Raleigh, North Carolina, and it employs a mostly remote workforce in North America and the rest of the world.

Open source software

Percona maintains a GitHub repository for their open source software,[2] which can also be downloaded from the Percona website.[3]

Other information

The company’s founders, Peter Zaitsev and Vadim Tkachenko, are active members of the open source software community. They co-authored with Baron Schwarz the book High Performance MySQL (3rd edition)[6], published by O’Reilly.

Percona hosts two open source database user conferences each year. These events are designed to provide information about all open source database software, not just those developed by the company. A committee of volunteers creates the programme from submissions to an open call for papers for Percona Live (North America) and Percona Live Europe.

The company supports the open source community with the Database Performance blog[7] which is largely technical in content; by hosting a technical forum and through sponsorship of open source organizations and events.
