Paul Carter, also known as Benbrick, is a multi-platinum selling British songwriter, producer[3] and composer. He wrote Sakura Nagashi with Hikaru Utada from her 2016 Japan Record Award winning album Fantôme,[4] the song was written for the end credits of Japan Academy Award winning movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.[5] Upon hearing his music Ricky Gervais called Benbrick "a future genius" and his music "stunningly beautiful".[6]
Songwriting
Benbrick wrote Sakura Nagashi (桜流し) with Japanese popstar Hikaru Utada.[7] It charted at No. 1 on iTunes[8] and has sold 600k singles worldwide.[9] Sakura Nagashi was the end-credits music to the Japanese movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo[10] which was the biggest film opening of 2012[11] and the 12th biggest opening of all time in Japan.[12] The single was also included on the 2016 album Fantôme. Upon its release Fantôme debuted at number one in Japan, and 18 other countries. It reached No. 3 in the United States[13] and No. 1 on the US Billboard World Albums.[14] Fantôme won Best Album at the 58th Japan Record Awards[4] and has sold 1m physical + digital units in Japan.[15]
Benbrick wrote Gasoline with Troye Sivan which was included on his record TRXYE. The album charted on iTunes at No. 1 in 66 countries including the USA,[16] United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. TRXYE debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200[17] and by July 2015 the EP had combined downloads of 371,000 in the United States,[18] had sold 80,000 copies of the album, and had been streamed 39 million times.[19]
Benbrick wrote Stand As One from Mary Jess debut album Shine which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.[20] Stand As One was used for a global P&G TV advertising campaign.[21] Benbrick also wrote 記得要微笑 on the 2014 Elva Hsiao record "Shut Up And Kiss Me"[22] which reached No. 1 on the iTunes charts in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Interaction with Ricky Gervais
In 2014 Benbrick composed "The Only Shortcut" set to scenes from Ricky Gervais TV show Derek.[23] Ricky Gervais discovered the music calling it 'stunningly beautiful'[24] later adding 'I just want you to love it as much as I do'.[25] In 2015 Benbrick composed "Perfect Ending" and set it to scenes from series 2 of the same show. This time Ricky Gervais called Benbrick "a future genius".[6] The pair met in 2016 after Benbrick created the music for the Derek Christmas Special Trailer which Gervais posted on his official YouTube channel.[26]
