Pashaura Singh (Sikh scholar)

Pashaura Singh is a religious studies scholar who has written several books on Sikh scriptures and history. He currently holds the Dr. Jasbir Singh Endowed Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies at University of California, Riverside.[1] His major publications include:[2]

  • The Guru Granth Sahib: Canon, Meaning, and Authority (Oxford University Press, New Delhi, 2000).
  • The Bhagats of the Guru Granth Sahib: Sikh Self-Definition and the Bhagat Bani (Oxford University Press, New Delhi, 2003).
  • Life and Work of Guru Arjan: History, Memory and Biography in the Sikh Tradition (Oxford University Press, New Delhi), 2006.

His work, "The Text and Meaning of the Adi Granth", was found objectionable and blasphemous by the Sikh clerical establishment. As a response, Pashaura Singh sent a letter of apology to the Akal Takht and affirmed his obedience to the clerics.[3]
