Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary

Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh state in northern India.

Setting

The sanctuary includes two oxbow lakes, Parvati Tal and Arga Tal, and covers and area of 10.84 square kilometers.[1]

Flora and fauna

Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary is in the Upper Gangetic plains moist deciduous forests ecoregion.[2]

The sanctuary is home to 212 species of angiosperms, belonging to 152 genera and 57 families, and three 3 species of pteridophytes, belonging to 3 genera and 3 families.[3]

The sanctuary harbours a number of birds including Sarus crane (Antigone antigone), Northern pintail (Anas acuta), Bar-headed goose (Anser indicus), Little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), Eurasian wigeon (Mareca penelope), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Red-crested pochard (Netta rufina), Tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), Knob-billed duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos), Ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), Cotton pygmy-goose (Nettapus coromandelianus), Little cormorant (Microcarbo niger), Great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), Intermediate egret (Ardea intermedia), Asian openbill (Anastomus oscitans), and Grey-headed swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus).[4]

History

Parvati Arga was declared a bird sanctuary on 23 May 1990. Prior to that it was under the fisheries department.[5]
