Pariyerum Perumal (lit.Horse laden deity) is a 2018 Indian Tamil language drama-thriller written and directed by Mari Selvaraj. Produced by Pa. Ranjith, the film stars Kathir and Anandhi in the leading roles, with Yogi babu in a supporting role. The film features music composed by Santhosh Narayanan.[1]

Plot

Pariyerum Perumal narrates the story of a youth hailing from Puliyankulam village, near Tirunelveli. Pariyan, played by Kathir, belongs to an oppressed caste, as evident from the setting of the film and the people he comes across in this story. The movie begins with the brutal murder of his beloved 'Karuppi'. The canine hunting companion of Pariyan, is the first one we see becoming a victim of caste.

Pariyan moves on to secure a seat in the law college, where he wishes to become a Doctor like Dr B. R. Ambedkar. He meets 'Jo' alias 'Jothi Mahalakshmi', portrayed by Anandhi, a naive girl from Ambasamuthiram, who takes it upon herself to teach English to Pariyan and eventually falls for his innocence and brutal honesty. This new found friendship irks Sankaralingam, a fellow law student and Jo's cousin, who awaits a chance to teach a lesson to Pariyan and establish his caste superiority. He does so while the blissfully unaware Jo invites Pariyan to a family wedding.

The events that unfold during the wedding reception, and later on in the story, portrays how a regular young man finds himself facing the ugly side of caste in any regular village in our country today. The story moves on to subtly but clearly establish what happens to oppressed caste people when faced with caste hegemony, and their helplessness to overcome the situation. The end of the movie is where the father of Jo, played by G. Marimuthu comes into terms with the price others are paying for his casteist mindset. The climax also opens up a discussion which is more essential for everyone in the cast ladder to take part in.

Another storyline portrays honour (or) dishonour killings that happens around this region. Where a very regular mason, murders various people in cold blood, and ensures that these incidents are received in public as accidents and suicides.
