Panthera leo leo (Linnaeus, 1758) |
Panthera leo leo is the nominate lion subspecies that historically occurred from North Africa and southern Europe to the Middle East and Asia.[1][2] It comprises the following populations:
- Barbary lion P. l. leo — inhabited mountain ranges of the Sahara and coastal regions of Maghreb from Morocco to Egypt.[3]
- West African lion, formerly P. l. senegalensis (Meyer 1826) — persists in small disconnected subpopulations in West Africa.[4]
- Central African lion, formerly P. l. kamptzi (Matschie 1900) — inhabits the Sahel region north of the African rainforest belt.[5]
- Asiatic lion, formerly P. l. persica (Meyer 1826) — occurred in Turkey and the Middle East until the mid-20th century.[6][7][8] Today, it survives only in Gir Forest National Park and surrounding areas in India's state of Gujarat.[9]
