La Michoacana is a Mexican chain of ice cream parlors, with an estimated 8 to 15 thousand locations in Mexico.[1] The "chain" is an informal network of family-run businesses, no single company operates them as a formal franchise operation.[2] Paleterias bearing the name La Michoacana (or variations of this) are also found throughout the United States.

The informal structure of the business has led to legal battles over the rights to the "La Michoacana" brand.[3]|

Many La Michoacana locations in the United States do not provide a menu in English, effectively restricting a large segment of the population who do not want to ask questions about each item offered.
