The Pakistan Trade Union Defence Campaign (PTUDC) is an international solidarity campaign for Pakistani working class which was set up in 1996 following the assassination of Arif Shah, the President of the Punjab Labour Federation.

History

In 1995, Arif Shah, a leading trade union leader, was assassinated[1]. After his assassination the Punjab Labour Federation, United Labour Federation, Progressive Workers Alliance, the Railway Workers Union and Nation Union of Postal Employees joined hands to launch PTUDC.[2]

Work

The PTUDC openly declares its views and aims in response to the need for working-class militancy and solidarity in Pakistan[3]. It is against privatisation process and advocates for complete nationalisation of industry and put it under democratic control of worker.[4] Its two members were arrested while distributing leaflets to oppose privatization in Karachi.[5] It is working to ensure safe working conditions at workplaces and demand better facilities for workers[6]. It also holds various public events to commentate workers struggle.[7]

In 2005, Pakistani Kashmir was hit by earth quack,[8] PTUDC had set up relief camps and demanded hefty tax to impose on all capitalists so that money can be generated for rehabilitation.[9] PTUDC has also established its support groups in Europe, USA and Canada.[10] Jeremy Corbyn also attended its solidarity meeting at London.[11]

In May 2018, PTUDC along with 16 others progressive organisations have established Lahore Left Front.[12] Lahore Left Front had hosted Pashtun Tahafuz Movement public meeting at Lahore on 22nd April.[13]

Its program is as follows;

1) Defense of trade unions from the physical attacks of the employers. Defend right to organise!

2) Stop the privatisation and plunder of state industries. Renationalise those privatised firms under workers’ control.

3) For a minimum living wage for all, linked to the cost of living.

4) The abolition of child labour. For free education and health.

Publications

Mazdoornama[14] is official organ of PTUDC, it is a monthly journal which carry news of all working class.[15]
