Patrick Joseph "Paddy" Ryan (born December 11, 1990) is an Irish-American rugby union player who plays prop for Austin Elite and the United States men's national team. Ryan previously played for the Newcastle Falcons, Libourne Athletic Union, London Welsh, and Rugby Viadana. Ryan also previously played for Munster Rugby's Munster A and U20 sides.

Early life

Ryan was born in Chicago, Illinois, but raised in Ireland,[1] the son of an American mother.[2] Ryan, along with his older brothers, played rugby for Highfield RFC and Dolphin RFC.[2] Ryan would later play for Munster Rugby's academy, ultimately playing with the Munster A side.[2]

Club career

Early club career

Ryan began his professional career with Viadana of the Italian Eccellenza, London Welsh of the English RFU Championship, and Libourne of the French Fédérale 1.[3]

Newcastle Falcons

In July 2015, Ryan signed a two-year contract to play for the Newcastle Falcons.[4] Ryan made seven total appearances for the club in English Premiership games across the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons, making one start during the 2015–16 season.[5]

Bath

Following the end of his tenure with Newcastle, Ryan joined Bath on a trial.[1]

Austin Elite

Ryan joined Austin Elite for their inaugural season in 2018.[6] At beginning of the 2018 Major League Rugby season, Ryan is recovering from an injury.[7]

International career

Ryan made his debut with the USA Eagles on June 10, 2017, appearing as a substitute in a mid-year test against Ireland.[8] The Eagles lost the match by a score of 55–19.[9]

Personal life

Paddy Ryan's older brothers Tim Ryan[10] and Dave Ryan are also professional rugby players.[2]
