Our Lady of Remembrance College, Madrid, (El Recuerdo or Colegio de Chamartin) is an infant through baccalaureate school established by the Society of Jesus in 1880, located in the Chamartín District of Madrid. According to studies by El Mundo in 2007[2] and 2012, it is one of the best schools in Spain.

History

El Recuerdo was founded in 1880 when Alfonso XII restored the Society of Jesus in Spain, after their expulsion by Charles III. The Jesuits decided then to recreate a school in Madrid that would live up to the reputation of the Imperial College, founded by the Jesuits in the sixteenth century and now the Colegio Imperial de Madrid. Calderon de la Barca, Lope de Vega, and Francisco de Quevedo had studied there.

The Dukes of Pastrana-Infantado donated their land in Chamartin de la Rosa for the foundation of the school, and classes began in early 1880. The lands were those of Quinta de El Recuerdo where according to some historians Napoleon resided in 1808 and where the capitulation of Madrid was signed, although other historians place the historical episode in the current school of the Sacred Heart whose lands were also donated by the Dukes of Pastrana from their Chamartin de la Rosa estate.[3] The original school building was in neo-Gothic style and designed by the Marquis of Cubas in the late nineteenth century.[4] In 1920, a new, Gothic-Moorish style building was designed by Modesto Lopez Otero, who modeled it after the house of Ignatius of Loyola in Azpeitia. From 1902 to 1931 the campus included a meteorological observatory that was part of the world network of Jesuit observatories.[5]

The school building was closed under the Government of the Second Republic that again expelled the Jesuits,[6] but classes were held clandestinely. During the Republic, the school became an institute and during the Civil War it was used as a barracks.

In the postwar period the El Recuerdo facility housed the Jesuit philosophate, until 1955 when this was moved to Alcalá de Henares.[7] Also during the postwar period included on campus was the free school of Nª Sª del Recuerdo, which had its entrance on Mateo Inurria Street and served mostly neighborhood children studying for the board exams taken at the Cardinal Cisneros Institute on Kings Street.[6]

A new dining room, classroom, and residence facility was added to the campus in 2009.[8]

Programs

El Recuerdo provides education to about 2,400 students in the Spanish educational cycles of Infant school, primary education, high school education, and baccalaureate [9]

Facilities

El Recuerdo is one of the largest schools in Madrid, occupying a total of 25 acres. It has seven laboratories, four museums, a theater-cinema,[10] and a large library with about 25,000 books, along with sports courts and gardens. Its ample facilities allow it to host large gatherings, like the Olympiad of Geography, with 194 students from 35 high schools participating.[11]

Activities

The school has a children's choir which frequently collaborates with the Spanish National Orchestra and the Royal Theatre, has received the Gold Medal of UNICEF, and has produced a recording.[12] There is also a parents and alumni choir which offers concerts twice a year, at Christmas and during Holy Week.[13][14][15]

A program similar to Christian Life Community is active on campus, with alumni/ae and parents included.[16]

Social service is a part of the baccalaureate program.[9] Since 1992 more than 6,100 students and 350 mothers of students have been a part of the voluntary service program of the school which has reached out to 42 organizations, acquainting students with, among other things, the reality of social exclusion.[17][18] Students also participate in the Entreculturas Youth Solidarity Network to raise their level of global awareness.[19]

Sports

The College competes at local, regional, and national levels, winning numerous trophies in track and field, basketball, handball, football, and volleyball. Its sports center offers multiple programs for the whole school community.[20] It also offers two courses accredited by Complutense University of Madrid for people involved in leading leisure activities for youth.[21]

Camps

The objectives of the camps organized by and for the College are as follows:

  • Live outdoors discovering your values.
  • To develop a playful activity for better physical development.
  • Learn to live in a more intense and committed community.
  • Learn self-reliance and how to cope with difficulties and fatigue.
  • Discover that friends can make you happy even with the lack of material things.
  • Carry out collaborative activities with colleagues.

The College organizes two different camps, one for each age.

  • Camp Chamartin: This is in the month of July at El Raso de la Huerta, a region belonging to the town Soria of Vinuesa, and is for students aged 12 to 17.[22]
  • Campamento Virgen del Recuerdo: This is in the month of July in the municipality of Navares de las Cuevas in the Province of Segovia, and is for students ages 9 through 11.[23]

Notable alumni

The school has long been connected to the elite of the city.[24][25][26][27]
