Orphx is a Canadian music duo made up of Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey who perform techno, industrial and experimental music.[1] They have performed throughout Europe and North America and have numerous releases on CD, vinyl and cassette through independent music labels such as Sonic Groove, Hands Productions, Hymen Records and Malignant Records.

History

The project was founded in late 1993 in Hamilton, Ontario by Rich Oddie, Christina Sealey and Aron West.[2] They first called themselves Oriphix, but changed shortly after their first cassette release to Orphx. Their early output was a development of early industrial music and power electronics but they soon began introducing elements of techno, electro and dub.[3] Their music at that time was distributed through the cassette label, Xcreteria, founded by Oddie and West. Xcreteria eventually became Third Force, a music distribution network operated by Oddie between 1995 and 1998.

West left in 1994 to create the noise project Tropism. By 1997, Orphx was working with Germany's Hands label and began performing in Europe as part of the "rhythmic noise" scene. Most studio recordings between 1997 and 2008 are credited to Oddie, with more recent output attributed to both Oddie and Sealey.

After recording on the Sonic Groove label, the pair performed at larger venues, including Berghain, Movement, Mutek, and Tresor, and contributed remix work for artists such as Perc, Oscar Mulero, Drumcell, and Traversable Wormhole. In recent years Orphx began using modular synthesizers.

Orphx have released collaborations with En Nihil, The Infant Cycle (Jim De Jong), and Mark Spybey (Dead Voices on Air/Download). Oddie and Sealey also recorded more ambient / electroacoustic work as Antiform between 1995 and 1997. Existing side projects include Eschaton (a collaboration with Ancient Methods), O/H (Rich Oddie and Dave Foster of Huren / Teste), Oureboros (Rich Oddie and Aron West of Tropism).

Orphx's 2004 album Circuitbreaking was a political commentary on economic globalization.[4] In 2006, Orphx released the album Insurgent Flows through the Hands label.[2] In 2011 their album Radiotherapy came out. These albums are characterized by industrial dance music with heavy bass rhythms.[5] Since 2009 they have been working with the Sonic Groove label and have become more prominent within the worldwide techno scene. The 2016 album "Pitch Black Mirror" was a joint release with Sonic Groove and Hands that combined industrial techno with post-punk influences [6]
