Opening Ceremony is an American clothing brand and retailer founded in 2002 by American fashion designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon.[1]

History

Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, partners since they were in college in UC Berkeley in the 1990s, decided to leave their jobs in corporate fashion to realize their unique dream after inspired by a visit to Hong Kong and that city’s thirst for fashion.[2] They founded Opening Ceremony and opened their first SoHo store on the border of Chinatown in September 2002 in downtown New York City as a place to share their passions for travel, art, and fashion.[3] Further stores followed in midtown New York City, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.[4] The Tokyo store, located in Shibuya, was ranked by American magazine Complex as the 4th best store in the world in 2013.[5]

Opening Ceremony has collaborated with brands including Rodarte, Topshop, Pendleton, Reyn Spooner, and Maison Martin Margiela, and has become known for its projects with creatives like Spike Jonze, Terence Koh, and Chloë Sevigny.[6] In 2011, Lim and Leon became the creative directors of French clothing brand Kenzo.[7]

Barbadian singer Rihanna wears Opening Ceremony on the cover of her album Talk That Talk (2011).

American singer Omarion wears an Opening Ceremony extra long varsity jacket in the music video for the 2014 song "Post to Be".[8]

American actor Jonah Hill wrote the one-act play Lost Cotton for Opening Ceremony's Spring 2015 Collection.[9]
