Olurotimi Badero


Olurotimi John Badero is a Nigerian-American physician; Interventional cardiologist and interventional nephrologist who became the world’s first and only fully trained Cardio-nephrologist (combined heart and kidney specialist) .[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Early life

Olurotimi Badero was born in Lagos, southwestern Nigeria, the seventh of nine children born to Chief Eliab Olufemi Badero and Stella Taiwo Badero. Olurotimi which translates to God stands by me and God is always with me was the closest child to his father and traveled with him everywhere his father went. He hails from Isonyin-Ijebu in Ijebu North east area of Ogun State. His grandfather, Joshua OluBadero Onasoga passed away 5 days before his father’s one year birthday[12] and his father would later change his last name to Badero[12].

His father was a trained tailor who later became a typist and administrative manager at SCOA motors. His mother, a banker worked with Barclays Bank as a secretary in the early 1970s. Badero had a brush with death at the age of 4 when he was diagnosed with measles[13] that almost claimed his life. Two years earlier, he lost his younger sister Olufunmilayo Abosede Badero to Bronchopneumonia when she was just eleven months old[13].

Education and Career

Badero began primary school at St Mary’s Private School in Lagos where he skipped 2 grades before gaining admission into Federal Government College, Odogbolu for secondary school. While at Federal Government College, Odogbolu, he alongside 3 other students participated in and won the Maiden edition of the National Young Scientists’ Quiz competition in Nigeria in 1987[5][14].

He obtained his medical degree at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria before relocating to the United States to complete three years of Internal Medicine residency at the State University of New York (SUNY), Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn NY. Badero was then accepted at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta Georgia where he completed a two-year fellowship in Nephrology & Hypertension. Badero then returned to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn NY to complete another three-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine.

After completing his Cardiology Fellowship, he gained admission into the Yale University School of Medicine program at Bridgeport, where he completed fellowships in Invasive & Interventional Cardiology as well as Peripheral Vascular Intervention.

Badero later returned to SUNY-Downstate Medical Center for another fellowship in Interventional Nephrology, Endovascular Medicine & Dialysis Access Intervention. Badero holds 6 specialty board certifications after completing 10 years of continuous postgraduate training.

Awards and Recognitions

• Distinguished Physician award as the First and Only Fully Trained Cardio-nephrologist in the world[3].

United States Congressional Citation/Record for Outstanding medical career and service to humanity[14][15];

• Global Excellence in Medicine Award, as the first fully trained Cardio-nephrologist in the world, OAU Alumni USA 2016[16];

• 2014 Mississippi Health Care Hero[17]

• First cardiologist to perform trans-radial cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary angioplasty at Central Mississippi Medical Center (CMMC), 2011[18]

• 2017 Mississippi Entrepreneur of the year[19].

Badero has featured in many magazines and articles[21][22][23] including Jackson free press U.S.A[4], Financial Nigeria International[1], My green gene magazine[5] as well as Avantgarde Magazine[2] talking about Cardio-nephrology and emphasizing the interrelationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). He has also appeared on many TV networks and radio interviews including BBC promoting cardiovascular and renal health awareness in the U.S and in developing countries [24][25][26][27][28]

Personal life

Badero lost his younger brother, Peter Olanrewaju Badero in his final year in medical school[13].

Badero is a church minister and is the assistant Pastor of Vine Chapel Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
