Oliver Tree Nickell, better known by his stage name Oliver Tree (formerly Tree), is an American-based vocalist, producer, filmmaker, and sketch comedian from Santa Cruz, California.[1] Through his high energy scooter-loving persona, he gained recognition after being featured on high school friend and EDM artist Getter (DJ)’s song “Forget It.” After his collaboration "When I'm Down" with Whethan went viral, Oliver Tree signed to Atlantic Records in 2017. [2]

Early life

Growing up in Santa Cruz, Tree began taking piano lessons as a preschooler. In middle school, Oliver sang and played guitar in a rock band but by highschool, he switched focus to become a Dj. By the age 17 he performed shows opening for acts such as Skrillex, Nero (band), Zeds Dead, etc. and then started releasing his own music under his middle name Tree.[1]

At age 18, Tree signed to London-based R&S Records and released his debut EP Demons. The EP gained some recognition after Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke approved his cover of their song “Karma Police.”[3]

Career

Oliver was originally known as "Kryph" from 2010 to 2011 and then just "Tree" from 2011 to 2016. Oliver Tree often incorporates indie-pop, hip-hop, and punk rock into his music. He consciously defies genres stating, “I think people want to see something extra; something more to watch and experience. I’m trying to combine both of those worlds to see what rock would be, or at least an alternative version.[3]

In November of 2016, he made his television debut performing with Getter (DJ) on Last Call with Carson Daly.[4]

Shortly after the release of “When I’m Down" with Whethan, Tree signed to Atlantic Records and then 1 month later graduated from California Institute of the Arts.[2][3]

Tree often posts videos and acts in comedy sketches and has worked with meme companies such as Fuck Jerry, Barstool Sports, and WorldStarHipHop.[5]

In February 2018, Tree released his major label debut EP Alien Boy along with the eccentric double music video for “All That x Alien Boy.” Tree wrote and directed the debut, which took over 9 months to create.[2][6]

Oliver Tree has gone on to play major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, and performed as a special guest at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and EDC, most notably at Coachella where he was subsequently named on LA Weekly’s ‘The Best (and Weirdest) Fashion at Coachella’ list in 2017.[5][7]

He was the supporting act on Louis the Child (DJs)’s 2017 Last To Leave Tour (2017),[8] Skizzy Mars’ are you OK? Tour (2018)[9] and will join Lil Dicky and DJ Mustard on the Life Lessons Tour this Fall.[5]

His track Movement was featured in a 2018 ad for The iPhone X. [10]
