Oliver Reginald Hoare (18 July 1945 – 23 August 2018) was an English art dealer known for his work in the area of Islamic art and his affair with Diana, Princess of Wales.

Early life and family

Hoare was born on 18 July 1945 to Reginald Hoare, a Norfolk landowner, soldier, and official in the British War Office. He was educated at Eton College and then, after travels in Persia, at the Sorbonne in Paris.[1]

Career

In 1967, he joined Christie's in London where he started the Islamic art department almost by accident after he found forgotten objects in a storeroom and used them as the basis of a successful auction. He stayed with the firm until 1974 and in 1975 started the Ahuan Gallery with a partner.[1]

He was involved in building several important collections of Islamic art. In the 1980s he advised Sheikh Nasser al-Sabah on acquisitions which are now part of the Kuwait National Museum. He assisted the Nuhad Es-Said Collection of Islamic metalwork, and in the 1990s he helped the Qatar National Museum to spend $1 billion on Islamic art.[1]

In 1994, he negotiated the return to Iran of part of a 16th century Persian manuscript in exchange for Willem de Kooning's Woman III which had been in Iran since that country's Islamic revolution. The objects were exchanged at Vienna airport.[1]

Personal life

In 1976, he married Diane de Waldner de Freundstein, who came from a wealthy French oil family. Diane's mother was Baroness Louise de Waldner, a friend of the British Queen Mother. Hoare and his wife had three children: Tristan, Damian and Olivia[2][3].[1]

In the 1990s, he had an affair with Diana, Princess of Wales.[4] One night, Hoare was found by a policeman hiding behind a potted tree smoking a cigar after the fire alarm sounded at Kensington Palace where Diana had her apartment. On another occasion, he was said to have been seen entering the boot of Diana's car.[1]

Death

Hoare died of cancer on 23 August 2018.[5][6][7]
