Olímpio Ferreira Chaves

Olímpio Ferreira Chaves was major aviator and a troop of the Portuguese Army which made up the first group of pilots for the Portuguese Military Air Force.

Biography

He published Noções elementares de aviação ('Elemantary Notions on Aviation) in 1918,[1] the first Portuguese manual on instruction for piloting aircraft mechanics.

He finished his military career as a major in Infantry.

He received his diplomat as a pilot on 10 May 1917, at a session held at the Lisbon Geographic Society, diplomas were also awarded to 12 other first Portuguese Air Force pilots and were Azeredo e Vasconcelos, José Manuel Sarmento de Beires, Sousa Gorgulho, João Luís de Moura, Luís Cunha e Almeida, António Cunha e Almeida, Miguel Paiva Simões, Pereira Gomes J., Rosário Gonçalves, Duvale Portugal, Aurélio Castro e Silva and José Joaquim Ramires.[2]

The Military Aviation was officially constituted in Portugal in 1914 with the creation of the Military Aviation School (Escola de Aviação Militar) for the Army and Naval Aviation (Navy), the a commission by members of the Aero Club of Portugal.

Family

He was a brother of Maria Alexandrina Pires Ferreira Chaves, Raul Pires Ferreira Chaves who was civil engineer and inventor and João Carlos Pires Ferreira Chaves. He was also nephew to archivect Jorge Ferreira Chaves and niece to Maria Helena da Costa Dias.
