Yndi Halda (pronounced YIN-dee hal-DAR and stylised "yndi halda" in lower case) is a post-rock band from Canterbury, England. "Yndi Halda" is Old Norse for "Enjoy Eternal Bliss", also the name of their debut release. The band's music is characterized by expansive, cinematic pieces that have seen them compared to post-rock and modern classical genres.

History

With members James Vella (guitar, glockenspiel, lapsteel, piano, banjo, organ, and vocals), Jack Lambert (guitar), Simon Hampshire (bass guitar), Phil Self, (keyboards), Daniel Neal (violin), and Oliver Newton (drums), the band formed in 2001 while all of the members were still in school. In the summer of 2005, the band began recording their debut album Enjoy Eternal Bliss, finished in late 2006 and released jointly in February 2007 by Big Scary Monsters, Burnt Toast Vinyl and XTAL Records.

Enjoy Eternal Bliss enjoyed favourable reviews on release and placed the band alongside peers Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor,[1] Explosions in the Sky, Mono,[2] and Sigur Rós.[3] Despite still being billed as an EP, the album runs more than one hour in length.[4]

After an extended hiatus, the band returned to recorded music in 2016 with the release of Under Summer, their first release since Enjoy Eternal Bliss, nine years earlier. While previously almost entirely instrumental, the new material featured a shift to more vocal songwriting. During this time, former bass player Brendan Grieve left the band, to be replaced temporarily by Alexander Petersen, and later permanently by Simon Hampshire. Additionally, new member Phil Self joined on keyboards and backing vocals.

In December 2017 yndi halda announced a new EP titled A Sun-Coloured Shaker. The EP - comprising one long piece - was released jointly by Big Scary Monsters, Burnt Toast Vinyl and MoorWorks in February 2018.
