The Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) is the most prestigious business school in Portugal [1] and a leading business school in Europe.[2] It is the faculty of economic, finance and management sciences, of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Nova). Its current director is Prof. Dr. Daniel Traça (PhD, Columbia University).

The Nova SBE is installed in new campus built in Carcavelos (Municipality of Cascais), inaugurated in 29 September 2018. The site for the new campus was provided to by the government, whereas the financing of the project is also made possible by private donations.[3] Until September 2018, the School was housed in the 19th-century building of the former Jesuit College of Campolide.

Nova SBE has been a member of CEMS since December 2007. Moreover, it is one of 77 Triple Crown business schools worldwide which implies accreditation by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. It has been the first Portuguese business school to acquire international accreditations. The international vision of Nova SBE is also reflected in the adoption of English as the main language of instruction. More than half of the undergraduate degrees and all Master, MBA and PhD programs are taught in English.[4]

In 2010, the Nova SBE created a subsidiary in Luanda, the Nova Angola Business School (NOVA ABS).[5]

Faculty and Knowledge Center

Faculty and knowledge center play a central role in knowledge creation and dissemination at Nova SBE. The international orientation of Nova SBE is also represented in the faculty with 25 different nationalities. As of January 2018, there are more than 40 chairs (core faculty together with visiting professors) at Nova SBE teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and contribute to the business school's research output.[6]

Research at Nova is combined in the Nova SBE research unit and the knowledge center. The research unit integrates the three basic disciplinary areas Economics, Finance, and Management and all its researchers into a single unit.[7]

The six knowledge centers at Nova SBE are conducting research with a dedicated focus on individual subjects and a cross-disciplinary orientation.[8]

Student Organizations

A large variety of student clubs and associations was founded by Nova SBE students. These organizations are constituted by students who move beyond their traditional role to boost the student involvement on campus. The Clubs emerged from the initiative of students, mobilized around a professional goal, a common interest or an innovative idea, building among them a community, a network and a life that goes beyond the walls of the classrooms.[9]

Rankings and Accreditations

Various international university rankings regularly rank Nova SBE among the leading European management institutions. Rankings, such as the QS World University Ranking [10], The Financial Times ranking [11], the Economist ranking [12] or the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking [13] confirm Nova to be one of the best business schools in Europe.

In the ranking of Masters in Management 2017 of the Financial Times, the Nova SBE took 17th place (previous year: 17) among the best management schools worldwide. The CEMS Master's in International Management, offered by Nova SBE, was ranked 9th (previous year: 4). The Economist puts the Nova SBE in 34th place among the 40 best Master programs worldwide. The QS World University Ranking ranks Nova among the world's 50 best universities under 50 years old.

Nova SBE is one of only 77 business schools in the world with triple crown accreditation[14], the exclusive Portuguese member school of CEMS and was awarded with the maximum of 5 palmes by the Eduniversal ranking.
