Middleburg Academy is a co-educational, nonsectarian, independent secondary school, set on a historic campus of more than 95 acres (38 ha) in Middleburg, Virginia.

Background

Middleburg Academy was founded in 1965. Originally a girls boarding school, in 1990 it became a co-educational day school. In 2000, the school was purchased by the Board of Trustees and in 2009 became a fully independent, nonsectarian school.

Education and Extracurriculars

The school welcomes students of all faiths who seek an independent, co-educational, college preparatory high school in the Northern Virginia area. Middleburg Academy has a highly qualified and experienced faculty. Of the twenty-seven full-time members of faculty, seventeen hold one or more advanced degrees with five holding PhDs. Advanced placement (AP) courses are offered in all academic disciplines. Our STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) is intertwined throughout the curriculum.

Students participate in a variety of clubs and organizations such as Green Club, Spirit Club, Yearbook, Student Council, and the Varsity Club. Students are required to complete a minimum of twenty-five hours of community service each year and many easily exceed this number. Community service is a prominent part of the school culture, with many opportunities for Advisory groups to participate in activities such as Adopt-a-Soldier and giving to needy families during the Holidays.

Each student is assigned to an Advisory group, which is a group of ten to twelve students and one faculty member. Advisory groups meet twice a week. The faculty member acts as a liaison to parents for information about upcoming school activities and for a first contact when students need guidance.

All students must be accepted into one four-year accredited college, pass all classes in their senior year, and fulfill an annual mandatory twenty-five hour community service prerequisite in order to graduate. College counseling is an important part of the academic experience and is tailored to each student and their family.

Athletics

More than 90% of Middleburg Academy Students participate in athletics. Middleburg Academy has a variety of athletics including basketball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, cross-country, baseball, golf, volleyball, swimming, and tennis teams. There is a no-cut sports policy allowing for all of the students to be a member on a sports team. Many of these teams have received national and regional awards. After graduation, many students extend their athletic careers by playing at the collegiate level. Some colleges students have played collegiately at include: Wheeling Jesuit University, Wingate University, Florida State University, and Mary Washington College.
