Nombu kanji

Nonbu kanji (நோன்பு கஞ்சி) is kind of porridge made mainly of rice, lentils, spices and other items. Usually it is prepared during the holy month of Ramadan when muslims fast for 30 days.

Mosques in the south Indian states of [[Tamil Nadu],Kerala and Sri Lankan Muslims distribute the kanji before the sunset prayers during the holy month of Ramadan when muslims observe fasting during the day time for 30 days. The nombu kanji provides one way of offering help to the needy – ensuring nourishment for those who might not have enough to fill their stomach after a long day's fast. nombu kanji, with its rice and lentil base, offers a nutritious and accessible meal after a long day's fast. History

Nombu Kanji recipe was first developed by Mr Danty Abdul Barris belongs to Kummali family, a Tamil hotel owner in Burma. Later he introduced, Nombu Kanji in his home town in [KADAYANALLUR] , Tamilnadu , India.

In 1948, Mr Danty Abdul Barris prepared Nombu Kanji in the mosque of (Kadayanallur) and distributed to all the people who comes to break fasting at the mosque. Since then, Nombu Kanji becomes an official Iftar meal in Tamil Nadu & Kerala.
