Night Flights is a science fiction book and a prequel to the Mortal Engines Quartet.[1] The book was written by British author Philip Reeve and published on 5 July 2018.[2][3] It is a tie-in for the upcoming Peter Jackson-produced film Mortal Engines.[4][5]
Setting
The book is set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a "Sixty Minute War", which caused massive geological upheaval.
The book is a prequel before the events of Mortal Engines and centers on Anna Fang before she meets Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw.[4] Night Flights documents three events in Anna's life as 3 vignettes.[5][6]
Plot
Vignette 1 - Frozen Heart
Anna Fang, a thrall in Arkangel, spots two Jeunot-Carot engine-pods and plans her escape. She steals them and successfully uses them to escape.
Vignette 2 - Traction City Blues
An adolescent Anna lands in London to try and obtain a powerful weapon.
Vignette 3 - Teeth of the Sea
Anna, now part of the Anti-Traction League, sets out to deal with Raft Cities, variation of Traction cities that float in the oceans. Her first act was to blow up the city of Marseilles. Later, Anna takes on a mission in Palau Pinang. Her target was the Sultana. The Sultana had allowed the island to be a refueling station for raft cities, a form of traction cities. Anna killed the Sultana by snapping her neck. This was considered somewhat barbaric.[7][8]
Development
Philip Reeve was inspired to write Night Flights after meeting Jihae Kim, the actress for Anna Fang in the Mortal Engines.[9]
Reception
Night Flights has a score of 4.28 out of 5 on Goodreads, as of September 24, 2018.[10]
Kirkus Reviews say it has "Solid storytelling with engrossing adventures... sic [and]... fans will be grateful for a firsthand account from the elusive character herself."[11]
The Times praised the book, calling it "a beautifully written and illustrated expansion of a killer character".[8]
