Nha Trang University is a university in Nha Trang, Khánh Hòa Province, in Vietnam's South Central Coast. It is a multidisciplinary university with 29 specialities from vocational training to doctor's degrees.[2]

History

Nha Trang University was founded on August 1, 1959 as the Fisheries Faculty of Hanoi Institute of Agriculture and Forestry. Following Decision No. 155-CP of the prime minister signed on August 16, 1966 the faculty was separated and named the School of Fisheries. In 1977, the School moved from Hai Phong to Nha Trang and changed its name to the University of Sea-product Technology. In 1980, it was renamed as University of Fisheries. Following Decision No. 172/2006/QĐ-TTg of the prime minister signed on July 25, 2006 the name was changed to Nha Trang University.

After 55 years of development, Nha Trang University has been on a sustainable foundation and gradually become a multidisciplinary and multi-level institution with strong emphasis on fisheries and aquaculture. Before 1990, the university had only five fisheries disciplines. At present, however, it has 23 disciplines for a variety of specialisations. From one undergraduate level at the beginning, the university currently has four training levels from professional certificate to doctorate.

With a significant contribution in training and research, Nha Trang University has been granted many prestigious government awards: No. 3 Labour Medal, No. 2 Labour Medal, No. 1 Labour Medal; No. 3 Independence Medal, No. 2 Independence Medal, and No. 2 Independence Medal. In July 2006, the government granted the university the Labour Hero Medal.

For implementing the national higher education reform plan, in 1990 the university moved from a year-based training system to a revised one by integrating the year-based and the credit systems. Since 1995, the university has gradually adopted the credit system. In this system, the students are recognised as the center of the training process. They can be active in planning their study progress in relevance with their capacities and then be offered degrees after finishing the required courses.
