Newyddion (Welsh for News) is a Welsh-language news programme consisting of Welsh, UK, and international news, produced daily by BBC Cymru Wales and broadcast on S4C.

Overview

The main evening programme (branded Newyddion 9) is broadcast each weekday evening between 9pm and 9:30pm, with shorter editions airing at varying times on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

In 2009, a new service of short weekday bulletins was introduced. Five-minute updates are broadcast at lunchtime (1:00pm), mid-afternoon (2:55pm) and early-evening (6:30pm).

Dewi Llwyd, who presented the programme for almost 30 years, was dropped from the presentation team in 2013.[1] Having previously been broadcast at 7:30pm, the programme relaunched in its new 9pm slot on 22 April 2013 with Bethan Rhys Roberts and Rhun ap Iorwerth[2] presenting on alternate nights. Mr ap Iorwerth later left the BBC to successfully stand for Plaid Cymru in the Welsh Assembly by-election for the seat of Ynys Môn.[3]

S4C weather forecasts are broadcast before or after each bulletin as well as before closedown and produced by Tinopolis in Llanelli.

Awards

Newyddion won the 2012 BAFTA Cymru Award for News Coverage for a special programme broadcast from New York to mark the tenth anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks.[4]

At the 2013 BAFTA Cymru Awards ceremony Newyddion was mistakenly awarded the News Coverage award. The award was later correctly presented to ITV Cymru Wales.[5]

At the 2015 BAFTA Cymru Awards Newyddion 9 was awarded the News Coverage Award for a special programme on the Paris Attacks.

They also won the News Coverage Award at the 2016 BAFTA Cymru awards for a programme about the refugee crisis.

Ratings

Viewing figures for Newyddion range from 17,000 to 22,000 according to S4C's weekly ratings report.[6]
