The New Westminster Royals was the name of several professional and junior ice hockey teams based in New Westminster, British Columbia.

History

The first team played from 1912–1914 in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) which was established in 1911. The team was notable as it was the inaugural champion of the PCHA when the league first started out in 1912. It would be the only league championship the Royals would earn. Their home arena was the Denman Arena in Vancouver.

The name was revived for a club that played in the Pacific Coast Hockey League from 1945 to 1952 and the Western Hockey League from 1952 to 1959. The Royals won the President's Cup in 1949-50 as PCHL champions.

The name was again used for the New Westminster Royals franchise in Junior hockey in 1962. The franchise was suspended after the 1970–71 season, then was reactivated as a Junior "A" team in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) from 1981–82 to 1982–83, and again from 1988-89 to 1990-91. The team won the Fred Page Cup, as BCHL Champions, in 1989–90, then moved to Surrey and has played as the Surrey Eagles since the 1991–92 season. Future NHL star Cliff Ronning was a notable member of the early 1980s Royals squad. Future convicted fraudster Frank Biller played for the Royals from 1988-1990 (winning the BCHL championship), then joined the British Columbia firm Eron Mortgage Corp, becoming vice-president and chief mortgage broker and helping to execute the biggest fraud in British Columbia history, taking investors for $240 million (over $357 million today) before being shut down by the British Columbia Securities Commission in 1997.^[1]
