NeueHouse is an American-based company that specializes in collaborative workspace. It operates internationally and provides shared workspace and services for entrepreneurs, freelancers, startups and small businesses. Founded and debuted in New York in late 2011, with an additional space in Los Angeles.

History

NeueHouse was founded in 2011 in New York by Joshua Abrams, Alan Murray and James O'Reilly.[1][2][3] The doors of its first building in New York opened in May 2013, where its founders aimed at creating a diverse community, whose members would benefit from interacting and collaborating with each other.[4] Within this context, NeueHouse published a hardcover print publication named NeueJournal; Meryl Streep, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright, Ed Ruscha, Oscar Isaac, Frank Stella, and Mary Heilmann were photographed by Brigitte Lacombe for the first issue's seven alternative covers,[5] while the eight cover featured Marie-Agnes Gillot, shot by Willy Vanderperre.[6] In the summer of 2015 the company raised $25 million venture funding by Great Eagle Holdings.[1][7]

Services

The main function of NeueHouse operated properties is to provide working space to small businesses and individual entrepreneurs, operating in the film, fashion, design, publishing and arts sectors.[7][4][8] Further to that, the occupants have the opportunity for networking and social interaction with people outside their industry, through live talks and cultural programming, organized by NeueHouse.[9] Unlike other co-working spaces, membership at NeueHouse is by invitation only and its prices range from $200-$1,500.[4][9] Members include Alexandra Kerry, Chris Blackwell and Paul Bettany among others.[10]

Buildings

NeueHouse operates buildings in New York and Los Angeles. The New York building is located in 110 East 25th Street in Manhattan; it is a five-story, 50,000-square-foot, century-old property.[11][12] The building was restored and renovated by renowned architect David Rockwell.[11] In Los Angeles, NeueHouse leased the CBS Columbia Square building for a 15-year period; the former CBS broadcasting studio, a 93,000 square feet six-story building, opened October 2015.[13][14][15].NeueHouse aims to expand towards Shanghai and Washington, D.C..[7]

Art and design

NeueHouse is also known for its art and design installations in its work spaces. In 2015, Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde created an indoor cloud in NeueHouse New York.[16] The atmospheric creation was one of several in a series and was featured in The New York Times.[16] In 2014, Sonos Studio NYC took up residence at NeueHouse Madison Square to explore the intersection of music, art and technology. Live performances included Devonté Hynes, Aloe Blacc and Mikky Eko, to name a few.[17] You can think of Neuehouse New York as having the appearance of a very chic hotel, rather than an office space.[18]
