Neil Patel is an American production designer and set designer.[1] He designs for theatre, opera, film and television, and has been awarded the Helen Hayes Award and two Obie Awards[2][3] for his work. Productions have included Side Man and Oleanna,[4] on Broadway, Mughal E Azam in National Centre for the Performing Arts (India) Mumbai and Delhi , Dead Man’s Cell Phone,[5] and Dinner with Friends.[6]

Career

He is a graduate of Yale College and the University of California, San Diego. Patel has designed productions for theater, opera and dance throughout the world. He designed Warren Leight’s Tony Award winning play Side Man on Broadway, London's West End, and the Kennedy Center; 'night, Mother, Oleanna, (title of show) and Time and the Conways [7] on Broadway and Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize winning Dinner With Friends off-Broadway and on national tour.

Patel has designed at the Guthrie Theater, the Steppenwolf Theater, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court Theatre, the Gate Theatre, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music among many regional companies in the United States and abroad. Since 1997 he has been a member of Anne Bogart’s SITI Company.

His designs for opera include the world premieres of Bright Sheng’s Madame Mao at the Santa Fe Opera and David Carlson’s Anna Karenina at the Florida Grand Opera. Both directed by Colin Graham.

Designs for television include the Peabody Award winning series In Treatment for HBO and Neil Labute's Billy and Billie for DirecTV.

Production design for film includes Some Velvet Morning (film), Loitering with Intent (film) and Dil Dhadakne Do.

Patel has received the Helen Hayes Award, a Taking Off Award in 1996,[8] numerous Drama Desk Award nominations, and is the recipient of two Obie Awards for Sustained Excellence in Set Design.
