Neale Richmond (born 15 March 1983) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Senator for the Labour Panel since April 2016.[1]

Education

A native of Ballinteer, Richmond was educated at Wesley College before graduating from University College Dublin with a BA in History and an MA in Political Science.[2]

Political career

Richmond was elected to Seanad Eireann in 2016,[3] previously elected to Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council in 2009 to represent the Glencullen–Sandyford electoral area. Richmond was re-elected in 2014 on the first count. Following his re-election to the Council, he was appointed by the Taoiseach as one of Ireland's nine delegates to the European Committee of the Regions.

He was appointed Chair of the Seanad Select Committee on the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union on 23 February 2017.[4]

He has previously worked as an advisor in the European Parliament and Dáil Éireann as well as a Projects Manager in the not for profit sector while he has spent considerable spending time working in Africa as a volunteer. He was Campaign Manager for Olivia Mitchell TD in the 2011 general election.

Political views

Richmond wears a Remembrance poppy[5] which commemorates soldiers who died fighting for the United Kingdom and British Empire. He added that he considers the Easter lily "has become offensive".[6]

He admitted he lacked motivation to be described as a supporter of marriage equality[7] and was heavily involved in the Repeal the Eighth campaign[8] which has paved the way for abortion to be legalized in Ireland.

Richmond is pro-European and has been a prominent critic of Brexit[9], as well as a noted critic of Sinn Fein[10].
