Nawab Haider Naqvi

Syed Nawab Haider Naqvi is a noted Pakistani economist and scholar.

Educational qualifications

Naqvi was born in Maraith, in 1935.[1] He migrated to Karachi, Pakistan in 1950.

He received his master's degree from Yale University in 1961 and his doctorate from Princeton University in 1966. He was a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University from 1969–1970.[2] Naqvi has served as the director of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, and, until recently, senior economic advisor for the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and Rector (Designate) of Kausar University of Sciences, Islamabad.

  • Sitara-i-Imtiaz (1991). A Distinguished Civilian Award for Academic Excellence (in Economics).
  • ECO Award for outstanding performance in the field of Economics (1992).

Research experience

  • Senior Economic Adviser, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), (April 1998 to February 2000).
  • Economic Adviser, MCB Institute for Development Research (1995–1996).
  • Director, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Islamabad (2 January 1979 - 10 July 1995). The Director is in Grade-22 and has been placed in Article 16 of the Warrant of Precedence for Pakistan. His status was equivalent to a Federal Secretary.
  • Chief, Economic Affairs Division, Government of Pakistan (1 October 1971 to 1 September 1972).
  • Officer-in-Charge and Senior Research Economist, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (March 1967 to 15 September 1971).
