The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) is an Australian Commonwealth statutory agency established under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 (OPGGS Act).[2] NOPSEMA serves as the national regulator for the health and safety, well integrity and environmental management aspects of offshore oil and gas operations in Australian Commonwealth waters; and in coastal waters where regulatory powers and functions have been conferred by state governments.[3]
NOPSEMA was established on 1 January 2012, superseding the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA).[4] The agency is currently headed by Stuart Smith[5].
