History

Administrative Building, NITIE, Mumbai

National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) was established by the Government of India in 1963 with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the International Labour Organization (ILO) to create skilled professionals. It was funded by the Government of India and registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.[2]

The institute was formerly known as the 'National Institute of Training in Industrial Engineering'. Later, the word 'Training' was removed and was rechristened 'National Institute of Industrial Engineering'. The institute, in its initial days, was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi. Gradually, during the late 1980s, these nodal centres were shut down and a single centre was formed, which is located at Mumbai.[3]

Noted industrialist Anand Mahindra and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh had suggested, in 2007, the change in name of NITIE to an IIM, Mumbai. The then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had promised to look into the issue. But no work has progressed in this direction till date..[4]

Academics

National Institute of Industrial Engineering offers post graduate diplomas in various fields of management and industrial engineering. It also offers doctoral level fellowship programmes.[5]

Admission

One needs to be a first class engineer (as per his/her university rules) or should have scored at least 60% in engineering (if the university has no criteria to offer division) to be eligible to apply for NITIE. 5% relaxation in engineering marks for eligibility is provided to SC and ST Category students.

NITIE accepts GATE score for shortlisting of candidates for PGDPM, PGDMM and PGDIE. GATE score from all the branches of engineering is considered for shortlisting. GD & PI are conducted at NITIE campus for shortlisted candidates. Around 120 seats are available for flagship program PGDIE and 40 seats each for PGDMM and PGDPM

On the other hand, NITIE accepts CAT Score for shortlisting candidates for phase two of the admission process for PGDIM & PGISEM program. There is a sectional cutoff and the overall cutoff of CAT Score and it varies with the course to which the candidate has applied. Depending solely on CAT Score, students are shortlisted for next phase where they need to undergo Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Depending on the performance in Group Discussion and Personal Interview, a list of finally selected students is announced.
