The National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement was instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India in the year 1996 to recognise children (under the age of 18) with exceptional abilities and who have achieved outstanding status in various fields including academics, arts, culture, design, innovation, research and sports. The National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement is the highest honour bestowed upon exceptional students in the country, followed by the National Bal Shree Honour.

The awards are conferred by the President of India on the 14th of November (Children's Day) every year in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi where the nation's highest and the most prestigious Civilian honours like the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri are also presented.

Akash Manoj [1][2][3] (16 years old), being conferred with the coveted National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement (Gold Medal) by The President of India on 14 November 2017 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Selection process

The child's achievement/excellence should be recognized/sponsored by an independent agency/authority in the concerned field. The achievement should not be one-off, but canied out over a period of time. There should be some indication that the child can continue with the activity for some time.

The corresponding application should be recommended by State/U.T Deptts., any Deptt. of Govt. of India/District Authority, Local Self Govt. (Panchayat, Zila Parishad, Municipal Corporation etc.), Experts in the field, Member of Parliament, Member of Legislative Assemblies/Legislative Councils and reputed Voluntary Organizations.

Eligibility criteria

  1. The child should be residing Citizen of India of or above the age of 5 years and not exceeding l8 years (as on 31 July of the respective year).
  2. The child should have demonstrated excellence in any one of the following fields :-

Innovation, Research, Design, Scholastic achievements (at the national/international level), Sports, Arts, Culture, Social service and Music.

Last date of receipt of recommendation

Particulars of the child recommended for the Award should be furnished in the respective application as per the prescribed format.[4] Recommendations are to be made on or before 30 September (for this year).

Selection committee

A Central/National Selection Committee constituted by the Government of India will make the selection out of the cases recommended by various bodies.

  2. Secretary or his nominee in the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment
  3. Secretary or his nominee in the Dept. of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development
  4. Secretary or his nominee in the Ministry of Culture
  5. Secretary or his nominee in the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports
  6. Secretary or his nominee in the Ministry of Science & Technology
  7. Joint Secretary (Child Welfare), Ministry of Womem and Child Development
