Nasreen Qadri (Arabic: نسرين قادري, Hebrew: נסרין קדרי; born 1986), or simply Nasreen, is an Israeli singer of traditional Middle Eastern/Mizrahi music.[1] Qadri, a former Muslim who converted to Judaism[2], mostly sings in Hebrew,[1] but also has Arabic language interpretations, especially Umm Kulthum's songs.[3]

Early life

Qadri was born and raised in Haifa,Israel, to an Arab-Muslim family. Her father was a taxi driver and her mother was a nurse. She was raised in Lod.[4][1]

Career

After performing for years in social events and small clubs and venues, her "big break" came in 2011 when she was a winner on the television star search program Eyal Golan Is Calling You[1][5][6][7]

Her debut album appeared in 2014.[8]

Personal life

For a decade Qadri was in a relationship with the Jewish Israeli musician Aviezer Ben Moha. They both planned to get married and Qadri even started a formal conversion process to Judaism, a process which she later quit.[9][10][11]In July 2017 the couple became engaged,[10] and in September 2017 the two separated.[12]

In 2018 it was reported that Qadri had completed her conversion to Judaism but that the process she underwent will not be recognized by the Chief Rabbinate or the Interior Ministry because it was carried out by a rabbi independent of the authorities.[13]
