Nangal Sahdan ننگل ساہداں is a town in suburb of Muridke in Sheikhupura District. It is most populous, Culturally rich, diverse in population, agrarian in nature, peaceful, and beautiful town . It is of the multitude of casts, Sects and religions. It is historical in nature, witnessed pre-partition era. Population of the town spread in the outskirt of Ruined Sikh Temple گردوارا. Now temple situated in downtown of Nangal Sahdan.

History

Nangal Sahdan was known as a Nangal Bawa in recent Past. it is one of the congregation of small villages which names begin with Nangal. As Nangal Kassan, Nangal Dunna Singh, Nangal Essa, Nangal Bucher, Nangal Waris, Nangal Kasowal etc. It was home to multitude of communities in pre-independence era, among them were Sikh, Muslim, Christians, and Dewan also. As far as the different communities were concerned, where a particular community was dominated the name of the village was called after him, as Nangal Essa, (Jesus Christ is called Essa in Punjabi and Urdu languages), so the residents of the town believe to be Christians in pre partition era. Nangal Dunna Sing. In pre-partition era both of the major communities of the town, Sikh and Muslims were living in harmony along with their cultural lines. Muslims of that ages belonged to down trodden class of that society whereas Sikh had upper hand over them. Down trodden Muslims were attached to the weaving of clothe, and clay pottering, they were called Jullaha and Kumhar respectively. Whereas on the other hand Sikh were landlords.

Post Partition Era

After the partition town remained in seclusion from the mainstream development until the 90s. No basic infrastructure, illiteracy, unavailability of basic health facilities, and road infrastructure. In 90s under the Kashmir cause Pakistan pledged to assist Kashmir freedom movement, and It gave rise to mushroom development of Jihadi Organizations under the umbrella of Military establishment. In order to assist Kashmir Struggle for freedom. Eventually it became home of one of such Jihadi organization. That very decade was the hallmark in the development of the town. There was a population influx, within the years there were established colonies. Name of Nangal Sahdan was renowned in international media.

Etymology

As far as the origin of name Nangal is concerned, it is of the diverse opinions. One of them is the assumption that it is of the Punjabi origin from Majhi dialect which means Home(Now it is obsolete in the language), a home of Bawa. He might be one of the elder in pre-partition community of that town.

Geography

Location

Town lies on the brink of famous Grand Trunk Road of Sher Shah Suri, about a mile from Muridke City, and 22 miles from Lahore. Gujranwala lies at the distance of 25 miles. Lahore City situated in Southward, and Gujranwala located in Northern side of town, whereas Sheikhupura lies in western side of town. International Border along with Indian side is about to 18 miles of aerial distance, lies in South east of the town. District Narowal, and Shakargarh working boundary situated in the eastern side whereas Chawinda Sector lies in north eastern of town.

Climate

As far as the climate of the town is concerned it is of the semi arid in nature, most of the time moderate. It is hottest in June, and July. Rainy in Monsoon season. Foggiest in November, December and January. Rice crop is mostly dependent on rains as well as on seasonal canal.

Agriculture

Due to tremendous increase in population, and housing societies, within and around the town agricultural land and activities gradually decreased and slow down. Most of population belongs to trade, services sector, overseas employment, and agriculture. Wheat, Rice, Water chestnuts, Sorghum Sudangrass, oat, cattle grass, and barmuda grass are of the popular corps in the town. But services sector and Trade are still dominant.

Flora and Fauna

There are numerous Plants and trees in country side, among them the most famous are Melia Azedarach (دھریک), Eucalyptus (سفیدہ), Azadiarchy Andica(نیم), Vachellia Nilotica (کیکر/ببول), Guavas(امرود), Plum (بیر), Mulberry (شہتوت), Black Plum (جامن), Daffodils (کنول), Ficus Religiosa (پیپل), Albizia lebbeck(شریں),Mahogany(بکین), Azadiarchta, Melia,D.Sisso (ٹاہلی). As for as the fauna is concerned there are domesticated animals like Horse, Mule, Dogs, Buffalo, Cow, Ducks, Rabbits etc.

Education

As for as the Educational Institutes and Educational Activities are concerned,the town is far behind the mainstream development. There are number of Institutes of formal education, seminaries, technical Education institute, College of paramedic, and also under develope college of Nursing but still people move to Murdike city for better Educational facilities, for higher education, and for Educational excellency.

Demography

Population

Town is one of the most populous in the district as well as in Punjab Province. It mainly consists of Muslim community as well as Christian. Ahmedi Muslims also residing there but very few in number.

Exact population figure is still ambiguous, but it would be around thirty thousand. It is composed of mainly adults and young ones, due to decrees in life expectancy rate.

Religion

Most of the residents belong to Sunni Islam and Christian Population, but also residing there Shia Muslim as well as Ahmedi.

It is home to number of different sects and sub sects of Sunni Islam and Christianity. Brailvi, Ahl e Hadith and Duebandi are the main sects of Sunni Islam, whereas Roman Catholic and Protestant are of the Christianity that are residing there.
