Museum of Contemporary Art at Dmitrovskaya

Museum of Contemporary Fine Art at Dmitrovskaya (MSID) is an art museum in Rostov-on-Don.

History

It was opened on February 24, 2005. The initiators of the opening of the first private museum of contemporary art in Russia were Elena Levina and Vyacheslav Davydenko.[1][2]

The museum is located on one of the oldest streets in the center of Rostov-on-Don, in the former mansion of merchant S. Yablokov. The building was erected in 1898 according to the project of the city architect EM Gulina (modern style). The exhibition halls of the museum are the only ones in the city where artists have the opportunity to be exhibited without rent for the premises. The museum conducts collecting, exposition-exhibition, scientific-research and educational work.

The museum is engaged in the formation and storage of the collection of contemporary art. It is mainly focused on the collection, representation, popularization of objects of contemporary art in all the diversity of their genre-species forms, created today in the territory of Russia.

The museum collection includes works of painting, graphics, arts and crafts from 1930 to 2006. Exhibition projects - "Province", "New Names", "Northern Way", "Two Capitals". In the structure of the museum there is an archive, a scientific library, an art council, an expert group, a restoration workshop. As of 2014, the museum owns about 2,000 items in storage.[1] The museum collection includes works of painting, graphics, arts and crafts from 1930 to 2008.

In December 2014, the museum was on the verge of closure due to financial problems.[3][4][5]

In September 2015, the museum resumed its work with the support of the businessman Dmitry Arzhanov. It was announced that five exhibitions would be held before the end of the year.[6]
