Murrieta Valley High School (MVHS) opened in 1990 as the first four-year comprehensive high school in Murrieta, California. T[he school is nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Plateau, at the western end of the city. It is operated by the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. MVHS is a California Distinguished School,[2] and fully accredited as a four-year comprehensive high school by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Campus and Facilities

The MVHS campus is housed on 52 acres (210,000 m2) and has 152 classrooms, computer labs, technology labs, photo labs, a video production studio, automotive shop, classrooms for ceramics, food and clothing classes, science labs, and a state-of-the-art performing arts center. Athletic facilities include a swimming pool, seven tennis courts, furnished gymnasium, football stadium, soccer fields,a wrestling room, a running track, softball fields and basketball courts. In addition, the school has a library, cafeteria, administrative offices, and a staff lounge. Other facilities include:

  • A 430-seat Performing Arts Center.
  • Fahrenheit Fields, the school's resident weather spokesperson.
  • Modern library media center with over 35,000 books and non-print materials, also online library catalog and reference databases
  • Internet connections available throughout the entire facility
  • A 48.5-acre (196,000 m2) campus which includes a 4,000 seat lighted outdoor stadium and 8-lane all-weather track
  • A CIF regulation-sized pool
  • A 2,400-seat gymnasium
  • NetTV in each classroom

Dance Team

Varsity Nationals 2011: One of the top dance teams in the valley, best in the Murrieta District. Coached by Hollee Romero and now (as of 2015) Megan Hemmerling, Romero's daughter.

Choir

The MVHS Chamber Singers were invited to perform at the Western Division American Choral Directors Association in Tucson, Arizona. Then in March 2011, Chamber Singers were invited to perform at the ACDA national conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Crimson Cadets

MVHS' marching band, the Crimson Cadets, were formerly under the direction of Richard Lorenzen, who died on October 25, 2009 of a heart attack. They are members of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA), and compete in SCSBOA field shows. As of 2011, the Crimson Cadets have been competing in the SCSBOA Championships as a 6A group, having won 2nd place in the championships on December 3, 2011.[3] Also, the Crimson Cadets won 1st place at the 5A championship in Fall of 2008.

The Crimson Cadets, led by Band Director Randy Dulaney, took Third place in the SCSBOA 4A Division Field Championship on November 18, 2017. [4]

Theatrix

Murrieta Valley High School's Drama Department (Theatrix) is currently under the direction of drama teacher Shilind Wheaton. The department stages an average of seven shows per year, including both mainstage and blackbox performances. Theatrix members compete in the annual Fullerton College High School Theatre Festival, where in past years have made the finals or won in events such as Technical Olympics, Theatre Games (Improv), technical design, dramatic and comedic monologues, and many other events.[5]

Nighthawk Robotics Club

The Nighthawk Robotics is a club whose mission is to construct robots using computer programming and they compete against 7,000 other clubs from around the region and world. The club, which started seven years ago by teacher advisor Kevin Bradley and a small group of students, has grown rapidly, thanks in part to the club's early success. In the past, one of the school's teams placed third at the national competition in Omaha and 2 of the teams qualified for the world championships in Orlando, FL. The robots, built using Vex Robotics materials, can cost up to $2,000 apiece. In 2009, the club received a $10,000 grant from the Roripaugh Family Foundation. The Southwest Community Development Organization helped the school apply for the grant, which will be used to purchase supplies and pay for club activities, including the trip to Dallas. The club has achieved plenty of success in Vex Robotics competitions, including winning the World Championship playoffs in 2013 and the Southern California State Championship playoffs in 2015.

ASB

The Associate Student Body (ASB) is a class through which MVHS runs most of its student activities and business.

IB Program

Murrieta Valley High School is an authorized IB World School.

Football

MVHS offers Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Football. The Varsity team was headed by Coach Lance Neal, who took over in the 2006 season after former coach Wally Clark retired. Notable performances include three semi-final (2001, 2002, and 2008), and six quarter final playoff appearances. Also, professional football player Jorge Cordova hails from MVHS. Neal was terminated as head coach at the end of the 2008 school year and was replaced by Coach Ireland. In five seasons Coach Ireland compiled a record of 38 wins and 20 losses and led the Nighthawks to five straight playoff appearances. At the end of the 2012 season, Coach Ireland resigned from football and Coach Vinny Fazio was hired in 2013.

Water polo

MVHS offers Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Water Polo for both boys and girls. The Varsity Head Coach is Bryan Lynton who also coaches at Elite Water polo which is held at the MVHS pool.
