Mount Sterling is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,025 at the 2010 census.[3]
History
Mount Sterling was organized in 1854. It did not have a court house until 1868 although it was designated the county seat from when the county was organized.[4]

According to the 2010 census, Mount Sterling has a total area of 1.11 square miles (2.87 km2), all land.[5]

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 2,070 people, 934 households, and 535 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,923.5 people per square mile (740.0/km²). There were 1,048 housing units at an average density of 973.8 per square mile (374.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.55% White, 0.14% African American, 0.34% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.
There were 934 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the city, the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,434, and the median income for a family was $40,363. Males had a median income of $29,333 versus $19,258 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,755. About 4.7% of families and 10.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
