Mount Kelly is a co-educational independent day and boarding school for pupils from 3 to 18,[1] in Tavistock.

History

Kelly College was founded in 1877 after Admiral Benedictus Marwood Kelly left the great part of his real and personal estate to Trustees, founding a charity which he directed should be called 'The Kelly College',[2] which should be for the education of the 'sons of Naval officers and other gentlemen'.[3] In recognition of the generosity of this bequest William Russell, 8th Duke of Bedford, 8th Marquees of Tavistock, gifted 20 acres of his Tavistock estate for the College.

Mount House School was founded in 1881 by Miss Parker and Miss Tubbs at Alton House, Tavistock Hill, Plymouth. In 1890 the school moved location to North Hill, Plymouth (now the site of St Matthias church hall[4]), moving in 1900 to larger premises at Mount House, Approach Road, Plymouth (the birth place of Miss Tubbs). Plymouth was heavily bombed in World War II and the school re-located to 50 acre site at Mount Tavy in 1940. Mount House School became co-educational in 1996 with a Pre-prep established for 3-7 year olds ten years later.[5]

Mount Kelly was established in June 2014 following the merger of two neighbouring schools, Kelly College (founded in 1877) and Mount House School (founded in 1881).[6]

Houses

The College has five houses:

  1. School house (Girls Year 9-11 Boarding House) (founded 1877)
  2. Courtenay House (Senior Boys Boarding & Day House) (founded 1901)
  3. Newton House (Boys Year 9-11 Boarding House) (founded 1939)
  4. Conway House (Mixed Year 9-11 Day House) (founded 1975)
  5. Marwood House (Senior Girls Boarding & Day House) (founded 1983)

There are four Virtual Houses. named after eminent historical figures: Brunel (Red), Scott (Green), Hepworth (Yellow) and Fry (Blue). Pupils can gain House Points by participating in Inter-House competitions in sport or music or for excellent academic work.

In 2016 the school built a 50-metre, 8-lane Olympic Legacy swimming pool, financed in part by Sport England and the National Lottery (United Kingdom).[8]
