The Monmouth County SPCA is an animal welfare organization providing animal sheltering and cruelty investigation services to Monmouth County, New Jersey.

History

The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1945 to care for the community’s homeless, neglected and abused animals.[3] It is a private, not-for-profit s. 501(c)3 organization led by a volunteer board of trustees. The organization is independent from and not affiliated with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of the United States or other humane societies.[3]

In 1999, the organization made the decision to become a no-kill shelter, saving all animals considered adoptable.[3] Since 2011, 90% or more of animals taken in have been saved.[4] The organization remains open-admission for communities it serves, taking owner surrenders by appointment.[3][4]

In November 2014, the organization reported having animal sheltering contracts with communities in Atlantic Highlands, Deal, Eatontown, Highlands, Little Silver, Long Branch, Middletown, Belford, Lincroft, Ocean Township, Rumson, Sea Bright, Spring Lake Heights, and West Long Branch.[5]

Animals available for adoption include dogs, cats, rabbits, pet rats, gerbils, hamsters, birds, and occasionally farm animals. In January 2014, three-quarters of the dogs at the shelter were pit bulls or pit bull mixes.[6]

Humane Law Enforcement

The Monmouth County SPCA also works to protect animals from abuse. The Humane Law Enforcement Division investigates more than 900 animal cruelty complaints every year, and accepts anonymous calls which result in useful information.

In August 2014, the organization recognized three police officers who acted to save the lives of three dogs in separate incidents.[7]

Services

In dog obedience training, dogs can go to puppy kindergarten, basic dog obedience, intro to agility, and foundation skills for agility. The Vogel-SPCA Spay/Neuter clinic offers a low cost way to Spay or neuter cats or dogs. Pet bereavement counseling is also provided.
