Monique Villa is the CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the founder of TrustLaw.[1][2][3]

Education

Born in Paris, Villa graduated from the Journalists Training Center in Paris.

Career

Villa began her career at Agence France-Presse (AFP) as a journalist. She was the Bureau Chief UK & Ireland, Agence France Presse from May 1991 to May 1996.[4] She worked as Director of Business Development and Sales Services, for the same company between May 1996 and May 1999.[5] She also served as Director of Strategy & Business Development from May 1999 to July 2000.[5]

Villa was the Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Reuters Media from October 2000 to April 2008. She was the Chairman, Action Images between September 2005 and April 2008.[6] Since May 2008, she has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer, Thomson Reuters Foundation.[7] She also founded TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation's global pro bono legal programme.[8]

Her recent work has focused on modern slavery, human trafficking, and corporate philanthropy.[9][10][11][12]

She is a board Member, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. She is also a Board Member, Transparentem and Global Editors Network.[13] She has spoken openly about the detention of a Thomson Reuters Foundation colleague, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, currently detained in Iran. This has gathered a high volume of coverage across the international media.[14]

Conference appearances and interviews

Monique Villa, alongside Christy Turlington Burns and Livia Firth, spoke up for women’s rights at the 2014 Trust Women Conference held in London.[15]

In 2016, Villa was interviewed by Les Prendergast, Managing Editor of Ethisphere Magazine where she spoke on "Giving a Voice to Those Who Need It".[16]

During the 2016 Press Conference USA, Villa granted interview to VOA radio where she spoke on Modern Slavery and its dangers.[17] In 2017, She spoke at the Trust Conference America Forum.[18]

Villa granted an interview to El Diario Vasco where she touched on issues relating to Modern slavery.[19] She also granted an interview to China Daily.[20]

Write-ups and Op-Eds

Monique Villa has written a lot about "Using Financial Data to stop trafficking".[21][22] She also has unique perspectives on challenges facing women[23] and sexual harassment syndrome.[24]

Villa has written Op-Eds on the issue of migrant crisis during the 2016 World Refugee Day.[25] She wrote an Op-Ed for Marie Claire magazine on Sextortion issue.[26] She also wrote Op-Eds for Chatham House,[27] Weforum,[28] and for Evening Standard Magazine.[29][30]

In 2016, Villa wrote a featured blog piece for World Bank on the topic; "Where the glass ceiling is already smashed".[31]

TV/Video appearances and Public speeches

Villa has appeared on CNN video where she spoke on issues relating to Modern slavery.[32] She appeared on France 24 where she talked about women’s rights and the Arab Spring.[33]

Villa has appeared on TedX Talk event.[34] She spoke at 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival.[35] She appeared On CGTN America where she spoke about public transportation safety for women.[36] She also spoke at the Legatum Institute on the topic; "Slavery".[37]
