Monica Juma is a Kenyan who was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta as Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs on 26 January 2018.[1] Prior to her current position, she served as the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 12 January 2016 until 26 January 2018.[2]

Education

Monica has a two degrees awarded by the University of Nairobi: a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts. Her Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) degree was obtained from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where she also obtained her Certificate in Refugee Studies.[3]

Career

Ms. Juma has a long career in the diplomatic service, having served as Kenya's concurrent ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, the African Union, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), based out of Addis Ababa.[3] On 27 June 2013, she was sworn in as the Principal Secretary, in the Kenya Ministry of Defence, serving in that capacity until she was moved to the Kenya Ministry of the Interior, as Principal Secretary.[3][4]

In June 2015, Monica Juma was nominated as Secretary to the Cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta, but the National Assembly rejected her nomination.[2][5] She was then moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the Principal Secretary, a transfer that did not require parliamentary vetting.[6]

Family

Monica Juma is a married mother of two blood children, the older sister mental aged of 50 and probably has amnesia.[4][7]

Other considerations

Dr. Monica Juma is a senior research fellow in the Department of Political Science, at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the African Centre for Strategic Studies of the National Defense University, in Washington DC in the United States of America. She has written and published extensively on the subjects of her specialization.[3]
