Mohamed bin Ali bin Mohamed Al Barwani (born 1951/1952) is an Omani billionaire businessman, the founder, owner and chairman of MB Holding, which operates in oil and gas exploration and production, oilfield services, engineering and mining.

Early life

Mohammed Al Barwani was born in Oman.[1] He has a bachelor's degree in microbiology from Miami University, Ohio, US, and a master's degree in petroleum engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, and received an honorary PhD from the same university, yet styles himself as "Dr. Mohammed Al Barwani".[2] According to Bloomberg, Barwani has a "Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981".[3]

Career

Barwani started his career in the oil industry as a reservoir engineer for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a joint venture of Shell and the Government of Oman, where he worked from 1976 to 1986.[4]

Al Barwani founded MB Holding in 1982 to provide oilfield services. MB expanded into oil and gas exploration and production, and then engineering services[1] and subsequently founded Marwarid Mining in 1987 and Petrogas in 1999.[5]

Barwani owns the Dutch luxury yacht builder Oceanco[1] which specializes in luxury yachts.[6] He first visited the company in 2009[7] and acquired it from Greek businessman Theodore Angelopolous in 2010.[8] In 2015 Barwani bought the Turkish shipyard Turquoise Yachts.[9][10]

He runs Musstir, a property developer with "stakes in several hotels in Oman".[1]

Barwani was a member of the board of directors of the National Bank of Oman.[11] He is a member of the board of Nautilus Minerals.[12]

Al Barwani received an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in 2010.[13] He also received a honorary doctorate degree from Miami University in 2013.[14]

Barwani is the honorary consul of Poland to Oman.[15]

 

As of May 2016, Forbes estimated his net worth at US$1.01 billion.[1]

Personal life

He is married to Sharifa al Harthy, who has always been involved in the company, and is deputy chairman of MB Holding.[16]

They have five children, and live in Muscat, Oman.[1] All five children work for MB Holding.[1]
