Miss Bumbum contest is a Brazilian annual pageant show which aims to find the best buttocks in the country.[2][3][4] Created by journalist and entrepreneur Cacau Oliver,[5][6][7][8][9] the competition has 27 contestants who represent the country’s different states,[2] and the winner of the pageant receives 50,000 reais (approx. $22,000) in endorsement deals and instantly becomes a celebrity in Brazil.[2] The competition is broadcast by the Brazilian television network RedeTV!.[10] The current title holder is Rosie Oliveira.

Miss Bumbum made its first foray into the US market by licensing an official 2017 calendar for release in the US. The calendar was released on December 1st, 2016 and featured 2016 contest winner Erika Canela on the cover.[11]

Criticism

In June 2013, Daisy Donovan, an English journalist working for Channel 4 claimed that popular television shows in Brazil, including Miss Bumbum, objectify and degrade women.[25] She called the show "a spectacular feast of the flesh" and said she felt awkward watching the final, adding: "It's a bit disconcerting being a woman here and not dressed in dental floss."[25]

Controversies

In October 2013, according to the International Business Times, models Mari Sousa, 25, and Eliana Amaral, 24, were accused of paying the equivalent of thousands of dollars in bribes to the judges of the contest.[26]

In 2018 two trans women became contestants for Miss Bumbum, the first such women to do so. Several of the other contestants objected to the inclusion of trans women in the contest.[1]

Similar contests

Miss Bum Bum Brazil has led to spin-off competitions in Miami (USA), Japan and for the World Cup.[4] Miss Reef, held in various South American countries, and Got Ass, held in North America, are similar competitions engaged in judging which women have the best buttocks.[27][28]

Cultural context

In Brazilian slang, bumbum is a term used for a woman's buttocks, which are considered an important element of physical beauty in Brazilian culture.[29] An appreciation of well-shaped and sizeable female buttocks is common and widespread in Brazil[30] and the traditional Brazilian preference is for women to have large round buttocks,[29] the Brazilian ideal being much wider, thicker and shapelier than may often be associated with the European ideal.[30] In 2014, more than 50,000 buttock implant procedures were performed in Brazil, compared to 19,000 in the United States.[31] The popularity of the Miss Bumbum contest in Brazil in 2014 led to online voting for the winner exceeding 2 million votes.[30]
