Mishi Choudhary is a technology lawyer and online civil liberties activist working in the United States and India. She is the Legal Director at the Software Freedom Law Center and the founder of SFLC.in. [1]
Education
Choudhary earned a bachelors degree in political science and an LLB degree with Honors from the University of Delhi.[2] Later, she was awarded a fellowship to attend Columbia Law School, where she earned an LLM and graduated as a Stone Scholar.[3]
Career
After graduating from the University of Delhi, she practiced as a High Court and Supreme Court litigator in New Delhi, where her practice covered Corporate and Commercial Law, Arbitration & Dispute Resolution, Property Law, Information Technology Law, Trademarks and Copyrights, Constitutional and Administrative Law.[4] [5] In 2006, she joined the Software Freedom Law Center in New York, New York.[6] Since 2013, Choudhary has served as Legal Director of SFLC, in which capacity she has been the primary legal representative of many of the world's most significant free software developers. Her clients have included Debian, the Apache Software Foundation, and OpenSSL.[7] She is currently admitted to practice in New York State, before the Southern District of New York, before the Supreme Court of India and all the State High Courts in India.[8]
In 2010, Choudhary founded SFLC.in, where she represents the rights of internet users and free software developers in India.[9] SFLC.in provides free legal advice and works with lawyers, policy analysts, technologists, and students to promote innovation and open access in the digital age.[10] Choudhary splits her time between New York and New Delhi. In 2015, Choudhary became the only lawyer in the world to simultaneously appear on briefs in the US and Indian Supreme Courts in the same term.[11]
In 2018, Choudhary launched Mishi Choudhary & Associates LLP, her own law and policy practice operating in Delhi and Banaglore, India.[12]
Honors and Awards
In 2015, she was named one of the Asia Society's 21 young leaders building Asia's future for her work as a technology lawyer and online civil liberties activist.[13] In 2016, the Aspen Institute named her as a Fellow of the sixth class of the Kamalnayan Bajaj Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.[14] In 2017, she won a Digital Women Award in the "Social Impact" category for her work with SFLC.in.[15]
