Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

The Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is a Russian military operated University located 14 Bol'shaya Sadovaya Street in Moscow. The school claims to be the leading educational, methodological and scientific center of the Russian Federation Armed Forces.[1]

History

The Military University started as theTeaching Institute of the Red Army which opened on November 5, 1919 by the order of N.G. Tolmachev of the Petrograd Military District. This makes it one of the oldest military schools in Russia.[2] The first leader of the school was Apletin M. Ya. (1919-1920)[3] The military considers the current Military University as successor to the VI Lenin Military-Political Academy. the Military Institute of Foreign Languages,[4][5] the Military-Law Academy, the Military-Financial Academy, the Lviv Higher Military-Political School, and the Moscow Military Conservatory.[6]

Since October 2017, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Head of the Military University has been Major-General Mishutkin Igor Viktorovich. He previous served as Deputy Head of the Military University from 2010 to 2017.[7][8]

The university focuses on the five areas of military-humanitarian, military-legal, military-philological, military-conductor and military-financial.[9] It has undergraduate, post graduate and professional continuing education. There are 53 departments across 8 faculties. It teaches 22 foreign languages. There are 11 dissertation councils. In addition to training active duty military, the school offers 15 civilian specialties for recently discharged military members seeking retraining.[10]
